Overlooked Movie Marathon 2: City of God (2002)

It’s the last day of the month.   We’re in the last three hours as I begin writing this.   I’ve just finished the last movie of my September marathon an hour or so ago.   This has been a long month of watching good movies.   But before it is over, I have to end this marathon by writing about the last movie in the second annual Overlooked Movie Marathon.   It’s a foreign film called City of God . City of God is a 2002 Brazilian film directed by Fernando Meirelles and Katia Lund.   It is a story about crime in Rio de Janeiro as told through the eyes of Rocket (played by Alexandre Rodrigues), a budding photographer.   The tale is about the rise of Li’l Ze (Leandro Firmino), a drug kingpin who, along with his friend Benny (Phellipe Haagensen), ends up in a turf war against Carrot (Matheus Nachtergaele) and Knockout Ned (Seu Jorge).   There are many other characters that come in and out of the movie as it goes along. I don’t have a wide range of foreign films that I’ve seen.   Foreign film is kind of a blind spot in my movie watching.   I don’t see too many films that aren’t American, but that’s something that has lessened over the past few years.   I’ve been seeking out some films from other countries every once in a while.   Other times, I’ve stumbled upon them through podcasts and through this marathon.   The second to last and last films are both foreign.   This post is about the second to last, a French film called Amelie . Amelie is a 2001 romantic comedy of sorts directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet.   Audrey Tautou stars as Amelie, a quirky girl looking for love while also pushing it away.   There is a wide cast of characters that I think it is difficult to get into.   They include her friends, family, and acquaintances.   The movie is about Amelie falling in love with a man who likes to collect unwanted photo booth pictures, but emotionally distancing herself from the man.   That des

Over the past decade, Tyler Perry has become a big name in Hollywood.   Between the cinematic and television works that he has created, directed, produced, and starred in, Tyler Perry has built himself into a household name.   It is tough to find anyone who has not at least heard of Tyler Perry.   The guy is putting himself everywhere and anywhere possible.   One of his most recent efforts was a movie titled Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor .   This is the movie I watched for this week’s Sunday “Bad” Movie post. Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor tells the story of Judith, played by Jurnee Smollett-Bell.   She is a wholesome woman working at a dating service run by Janice (Vanessa Williams).   When a potential investor, Harley (Robbie Jones) arrives, she is tempted to cheat on her husband Brice (Lance Gross).   Her whole world is turned upside down and some crazy things happen along the way.   Also in the movie are Kim Kardashian as Ava, Judith’s
