Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Season 2, Episode 11: The Song of Guitardo

In the last episode of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Tommy nearly sacrificed his powers to save a girl that Trini knew.  Lord Zedd had kidnapped her and taken her to Venus Island.  Oh, and Trini was given a hint of character as she stared at Richie when he walked by her.  The show is chugging along with story at this point, so let’s see what the next episode brings us.

It looks like we’re in store for another music monster episode.  Last time we had this kind of monster, it was the Pumpkin Rapper and things strange.  This time, it will be something called Guitardo.  I am imagining a lizard with a guitar and a cowboy hat.  If that’s the actual monster, I will be delighted.  It probably won’t be, but I can hope.

Season 2, Episode 11: The Song of Guitardo
The episode began with Kimberly writing a song for Tommy.  She had the guitar and the melody down but she couldn’t find the right lyrics for what she wanted to say.  Zack was enlisted to help her with the words since he is known to be a good lyricist.  At the end of the episode, they premiere their song to the entire group in a rather touching moment.  The song represented the end of Tommy’s time as the Green Ranger.  The next two episodes will see his powers disappear.

While the gang had a picnic in the park, Bulk and Skull were trying to find out who the Power Rangers were.  Their plan this episode was reminiscent of an earlier plan where they dressed as putties.  This time around, Bulk dressed as a monster while Skull dressed as a damsel in distress.  They were told not to cry wolf because people would stop trying to help them.  They ended up needing help while Bulk was trying to get his helmet unstuck.  The Guitardo showed up to harass them.  They ran through the park screaming and were no longer involved in the action.

While the Power Rangers went to tell Bulk and Skull not to cry wolf, Lord Zedd made a monster out of a beetle and Kimberly’s guitar.  Guitardo controlled minds with his music.  Four of the Power Rangers were affected by the music, leaving Kimberly and a weakened Tommy to save them.  The two soon discovered that the counter to Guitardo’s music was more music.  They used their weapons to play music back at Guitardo.

The only fighting that happened was Tommy going one on one with Guitardo.  There wasn’t anything memorable about it.  They fought in the park and they fought at the fair.  There were no putties.  At the end, Kimberly killed the monster by shooting it, using Tommy’s dagger as an arrow for her bow.

This episode was important for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.  It’s not as important as the next two episodes, which are our farewell to the Green Ranger, but it was important to his arc all the same.  This was the end of the group being the Red, Yellow, Blue, Black, Pink, and Green Rangers.  This was the last time that the team would exist.  That was solidified through the final song, which was a goodbye to those powers.  This will be further supported in the next episode when Tommy transitions out of his role as the Green Ranger.

Outside of your average Mighty Morphin Power Rangers monster, there wasn’t much strange about the episode.  The only thing worth pointing out was the mind control power.  When you hear mind control, you probably start thinking that the victim will do whatever the controller wants.  That wasn’t what happened with Guitardo.  His mind control was a levitation spell.  The Power Rangers were held helpless in the air.  That’s not mind control.  That’s not mind control at all.

That does it for this Mighty Morphin Power Rangers episode.  Guitardo’s music has been put on mute.  Lord Zedd was defeated once again.  The next episode is Green No More, Part 1.  I’m looking forward to it.  It’s the conclusion of the Tommy storyline that has been a big part of the first leg of this season.  It’ll be interesting to see how they finish it off and what will follow.  Come back next time to see how the first part of the two part story plays out.
