Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Season 2, Episode 52: Blue Ranger Gone Bad

Previously in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Kimberly was sent back to 1880 where she had to fight Goldar, a cactus monster, and a bunch of putties.  It was a rootin’, tootin’ good time as she made friends with the ancestors of her friends and saved Angel Grove from destruction before she was even a Power Ranger who could stop it.  It was a fun blend of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers with a western setting, though it wasn’t completely successful.

Now we’re at the second season finale.  The group is going to have to fight as hard as ever to stop Lord Zedd and Rita Repulsa’s plans.  It should be an exciting episode that paves the way for future seasons.  It will probably be a standard episode where nothing much changes.  Either way will be fun as we dive into…

Season 2, Episode 52: Blue Ranger Gone Bad
The students of Angel Grove High School were in a sculpting class making vases and statues.  Billy was showing off his hologram when a girl named Violet began flirting with him.  She showed him a statue she had made of him.  Billy didn’t know how to respond.  After going to the park with Adam, Tommy, and Kimberly, he decided he would ask her out.

Lord Zedd had different plans.  He brought the statue to life as an evil Billy and kidnapped the real Billy.  Billy was trapped in some sort of freeze ray thing with fog billowing around him.  If he didn’t get out quick, the fog would put him into an eternal sleep.  Meanwhile, the fake Billy told his friends he had no interest in Violet and that he only wanted to lift weights.  While they were hanging out with him, he stole their communicators (he said he was repairing them for Zordon) and morphers (he just outright stole them).  Tommy was the only one to keep his communicator because he wanted to stay in contact with Zordon.  He soon found out that Zordon didn’t ask for any repairs and the secret identity spilled out quickly.

While the Power Rangers were fighting off Goldar, putties, and an evil Billy, the real Billy was trying to find his way out of danger.  He remembered that he had his hologram disk and used it to reflect the freeze ray back at itself.  It broke down and he was freed.  Billy joined his friends and went up against evil Billy in one of those “I’m the real Billy” scenes.  The friends used Billy’s hologram knowledge to prove who the real Billy was.  Then they defeated the imposter.

There was one more obstacle.  Lord Zedd had taken Tommy’s vase and turned it into a monster.  The group defeated the monster and went back to their sculpting class.  Violet turned the Billy sculpture into a figure of Billy as a gold Power Ranger.  Bulk and Skull said he could never be a Power Ranger while everyone chuckled because they knew he was.

Two major fights happened in the episode.  One was the putty battle.  There’s always an added layer to the putty fights when the teenagers must obtain an item at the same time as fighting off putties.  This time, they had to get fake Billy’s backpack, which held all of their morphers.  There was some tossing of the bag and some teamwork as Adam and Rocky distracted bad guys so Aisha could attempt to get the backpack.  The other major battle was the Zord battle where both the Mega Thunderzord and the White Tigerzord went up against the vase monster.  The original Sentai version of the fight didn’t feature the White Tigerzord, so there was some editing done to make everything look like it was happening.  It wasn’t the best fight of the season, but it was a fine enough one for the finale.

The second season of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers ended much like its first, on a standalone episode that didn’t mean much to the overall story.  This time, it was a Billy episode.  The season was an interesting one, delving more into the serialized nature that I wanted after the first season.  It’s kind of strange that they would decide to finish up the season on an episode that meant the least to the series.  That’s what happened though.  A single episode capped it off.  It was an episode that had no meaning upon any of the events that would happen in the future.  It was just a fun little ending to a solid season of growth.

Blue Ranger Gone Bad did mark one of the many times that a love interest was introduced for Billy.  It also marked one of the many times that a love interest for Billy would disappear after one episode and never be mentioned again.  This time was Violet, a girl that liked Billy and crafted a sculpture of him.  Fake Billy wasn’t interested in her, but real Billy was.  It wouldn’t last into the next season.  Only one of his love interests ever lasted more than one episode and that was Laura, who appeared in Opposites Attract and Goldar’s Vice-Versa.

Season 3 will be coming up soon.  There are a few special posts that must go up first.  Some specials were made during the second season and between seasons 2 and 3.  One of them was Alpha’s Magical Christmas, which has already been covered.  Lord Zedd’s Monster Heads, and a Power Rangers Live video were also made during that time.  Plus, there’s the movie.  So, I’ll be covering all of that before getting into season 3.  It should be some interesting stuff and I hope you’ll join me as I continue my Mighty Morphin Power Rangers journey.
